In practice, we are doing our best to prevent these situations, and thousands of users are enjoying it without problems. We believe the safest way to run Magic Lantern (or any third party camera control software) is to use custom modes - in these modes, Canon code does not save user settings to NVRAM.
We did encounter such problems during development, but we were able to recover from them. We consider this a design flaw in Canon software. Imagine that your config file gets corrupted and you can't just delete it and start from scratch. Even developers of USB control software, who use Canon's own SDK, agree with this. These programs use the same API for changing camera settings (properties), and Canon code does not always check the validity of the settings before saving them to NVRAM. The same risk is present if you use third party software for USB remote control. If Magic Lantern would set incorrect values for certain settings, this may cause the camera not to boot (even without ML). Magic Lantern does not replace Canon code (which is stored in ROM), but it does change the settings (which are saved to a non-volatile memory). Therefore, we can't be certain that it's 100% safe. Guncheon has written a fine book that deserves a better physical production than it got.No. Whoever thought this is how a camera book should be designed? I could delve into this book, but I find myself shying away from it. Likewise, symbols and icons used in the text are so tiny they often can't be deciphered without a magnifying glass. The section headings are even worse: they are pale red in color and so thin they're barely there. Guncheon's book was given a sans-serif font, like Helvetica or Arial, that's not only small in size but exceptionally thin. Even the small Canon owners manual uses a slightly larger font size for the body type. The typeface is tiny and an effort to read. If I could rate the design of the book separately I'd give it no stars at all. That is the advantage of well-written third-party camera books like this one, compared to the bare-boned owners manuals that come with the camera that only tell you "how."īut I had to ding the book as a whole one star because the author's good work is undermined by the physical design of the book that makes it hard and even painful to read. He gives helpful tips and explains the WHYs and REASONS for using the various settings on the camera depending on the situation that you're in. His writing style is clear and understandable. His coverage of the 60D is thorough, detailed, and very well explained. I wish I could give this book five stars.
